Mike Nichols

Mike Nichols, the director of one of my three favorite films (The Graduate) is appearing tomorrow night at Riverspace Arts in Nyack. I bought a pair of tickets a few months ago so Chrissy and I could go together.

The appearance is a rare one for Nichols, who doesn't often talk about his work. He'll be interviewed by A&E's Elliot Forrest as part of the Conversations at Riverspace series. I've attended two other events in this series and they are really fantastic. They are mixture of interview, conversation, and presentation. I'm sure they will talk about Spamalot, Working Girl, Silkwood, and others, but I really just want to hear most about The Graduate. Nichols has won an Oscar, a Tony, a Grammy, and an Emmy. He's an incredibly talented director and I can't wait to hear him talk about his work.

Now that Chrissy and I are barely speaking, she doesn't want to go. I have a spare ticket and a cold.

The show is tomorrow (Friday) at 8pm if someone wants the ticket and my cold.

LIVESTRONG

My friend found out this week that he has cancer. He's 38 years old. According to the wizards at Sloan-Kettering, it's a slow-moving cancer that he may have had for more than 20 years. But of course, they don't know for sure. They might be able to operate and remove part of it, but not all. He'll require radiation treatment and possibly chemo if they can't cut enough of it out. They might not be able to cut any of it out because it has surrounded his pelvic aorta

I don't know the details, but it's some kind of pelvic parasympathetic ganglion tumor and it might be responsible for the high-blood pressure he's had since age 16.

I've been in a crappy mood since I found out. Of course, I've been in a pretty crappy mood for year, so it's hard to tell when I'm in a crappy mood. I saw Tommy this weekend and I could tell how nervous he was. He does an online radio show and when he's on the air he is a great entertainer. I don't know how he is continuing to pull it together and go on the air twice a week while dealing with this.

Bedtime Pills are Meant for Bedtime

Every morning I take a Centrum multi-vitamin, a B-12, and a Pepcid 20mg for heartburn.

Every evening, around 9:00pm, I take a Klonopin for anxiety. I also take a Benedryl to counteract the dust caused by my forced-air heating system (already have a foam mattress, a HEPA filter, and no carpeting upstairs, but still get an itchy nose. For the past month or so I've also been taking an anti-depressant called Doxipin which has sedative effect. Finally, I also take Temazepam, a sleeping pill.

I use a daily/weekly pill-box to keep track of all of these. I fill it up on Sunday and I'm good to go for the week. Yesterday I accidentally took the evening pills in the morning. Yes, I took four sedatives and went to work.

By 9:30 I was so tired that I had to tell my boss I was going home. If I had realized at the time why I was so tired, I would not have driven myself home. I fell asleep on the way home and the rumble-strips on the highway woke me up, quite possibly saving my life. I got home around 10:15 and got into bed and slept for about five hours.

Of course I didn't retake the nighttime meds, except for the Benedryl, so I hardly slept at all last night. Lots of extra caffeine and a "5-Hour Energy" drink will hopefully get me through the workday.

Back at Kung Fu

I returned to my kung-fu training this week. Yesterday I took the basic class, taught by Jiao Lin DelTorro. I have never trained with him before, so it was a treat. The fact that it was my first workout in several months made it a bittersweet treat, but a treat nonetheless. We worked on a kempo technique which was new to me. The people at Romain's Kung Fu in Nyack are so friendly that it's like walking into a room filled with family. Some of them knew why I was absent for so long and seemed happy to have me back.

Tonight, I went to class again, for the intermediate workout (my level). I wasn't planning to go two nights in a row, but something at home sparked the need and so I went. After the warmup, Lao Shr came out and worked kick-combos with us. It was a very fast-paced class and the 20 pounds I've put on made it difficult to keep up. I can't seem to stop eating lately. I suspect that's being caused by the new medication I'm taking.

Having missed a few months of training means I also missed two opportunities for rank advancement so students who were beginners have caught up to me and my cohorts have moved ahead a few levels. This stings a little but I will not allow it to deter me from achieving the goals I have set for myself.

Writer's Block: Traditional Pursuits

There are a lot of things we see most often in December, like caroling, potato latkes, mistletoe, mulled wine, eggnog, and returning gifts. What's your favorite holiday tradition?

This is an EASY one for me. I have written about it here in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2007 I'm not sure why I didn't mention in 2006, but someone posted a clip of that year on YouTube.

Every year I spend 90 minutes or so playing Christmas carols with a small brass band in downtown Nyack. The band is let by Bert Hughes and we collect money to pay for a community breakfast at the Nyack Senior Center (open to all). It is typically my favorite 90 minutes of the year.
